MOT TYPE 4 SUB-BASE – FREE DRAINING AGGREGATE
MOT Type 4 Sub-Base is an open-graded, free-draining aggregate specifically designed for projects where effective water management is essential. Unlike traditional MOT Type 1, Type 4 contains little to no fines, allowing water to pass freely through the material while still providing a strong and stable foundation.
Manufactured from crushed stone or recycled aggregates, Type 4 is commonly used beneath permeable paving systems and other applications where drainage performance is a priority. Its open structure helps reduce standing water and supports Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), making it an increasingly popular choice for both domestic and commercial projects.

Typical Coverage
One tonne of MOT Type 4 Sub-Base will typically cover approximately:
• 10–12m² at 50mm depth
• 6–7m² at 75mm depth
• 5–6m² at 100mm depth
• 3–4m² at 150mm depth
Coverage is approximate and will vary depending on compaction, ground conditions, and the exact grading of the material.
For driveways and permeable paving systems, a compacted depth of 100–150mm is typically recommended, depending on the expected loading and ground conditions.
